So streaming turned musicians towards performance As a way of earning, I’m guessing COVID-19 will turn us towards recording. The streaming model has failed musicians so how will recording serve the professional musician.
Interesting question. I don't make my living in the music business, but I have a couple of thoughts. In general it seems many, if not most, consumers these days are unwilling to pay for music or are only willing to pay for streaming. I'm not sure how you change this mindset, but I'm also not sure more recording is going to necessarily make things more profitable for the musicians. Given COVID-19, many clubs and individual performers have turned to the internet for performance, although most are not charging and are looking for donations. My own perception is that this is quickly becoming oversaturated (at first I would hear of 1 or 2 performances, but now my mailbox is getting inundated daily with promotions for online streaming performances) and I assume this is not going to be a viable long term business model. Nonetheless, improvisation is the landmark of this music. I have no doubt that musicians will find a way to change with the environment as necessary and make it work.
